From Jackson County, Bryan Canterbury, a retired teacher, had a hand in 17 of 26 West Virginia team state championships claimed at Ravenswood High School through the years.
A proud graduate of Ravenswood High School, Canterbury’s championship success includes guiding the Red Devil boys cross country program to ine consecutive Class AA-A titles form 2000-2008 (a state record).
In addition to his work on the Ross country course, Canterbury teamed with close friend Jim Mahan to mold a girls track and field dynasty from 1988-1993. During that stretch, the Devilettes won five out of six state championships in Class AA-A. Along the way an array of individuals captured titles in various events on Canterbury’s watch.
A long-time assistant to state boys basketball coaching legend Mick Price, Canterbury played a vital role in the Red Devils of 2006 and 2009 winning Class AA state titles. Three other Devil teams earned the runner -up trophy during Canterbury’s time on the bench.
As a young assistant in 1982, Canterbury was on the coaching staff of Butch Varney as the Devilettes won the Class AA state crown for girls basketball.
Before his coaching career was launched, Canterbury enjoyed tons of success as an athlete. At Ravenswood High, he was a starter at center and linebacker Kerr for the storied Red Devil football program under Fred Taylor. He was one of just a few underclassmen to start on the undefeated 1974 Red Devil team which reached the Class AAA semifinals (when just four teams made the playoff in WV as opposed to 16 today.) It was one of only two seasons in which Ravenswood played at the AAA level. He also excelled in discus and shot put during the track and field seasons each spring.
After graduating from Ravenswood in 1976, Canterbury went to West Virginia State College (now University) and was a four-year starting center in football and track and field competitor.
