
ED WILSON (PLEASANTS COUNTY) A 1970 graduate of St. Marys High School, Ed Wilson had many wonderful years coaching at his alma mater.
His love for sports led him to Marshall University on a football scholarship. He was a defensive back on the scout team for the Thundering Herd. Freshmen were not eligible and thus didn’t travel. Wilson was one of many who lost his football brothers and coaches in the 1970 plane crash.
He suffered a knee injury in 1971 and didn’t get to play for Jack Lengyel’s Young Thundering Herd. He would later transfer to Glenville State College, playing both football and baseball for the Pioneers.Wilson got his coaching career going as an assistant in football at Oak Glen High School in 1976 before moving to Eastern Local in Ohio. He returned to Pleasants County in 1977, coaching football and basketball at the middle school level.His chance to lead St. Marys in baseball started in 1990 and he would guide the Blue Devils on the diamond through the 2022 campaign. During that stretch, his purple and gold captured 505 victories.
He led two teams to the West Virginia State Tournament in 1990 and 2014. He also coached 11 teams to sectional titles and six others to Little Kanawha Conference crowns.
Wilson was a six-time LKC Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year twice. He coached in four North-South All-Star baseball team. Wilson had 20 First or Second Team All-Staters during his career.
