Janet Frazier – Class of 2924

JANET FRAZIER (WIRT COUNTY)

If you look up the word volleyball in the dictionary, there’s a good chance a picture of Janet Frazier will accompany the sport’s definition.

To say that Frazier made a name for herself in volleyball would be quite the understatement.

From 1990-2018, Frazier was the face of Wirt County High School girls volleyball.

And when she wrapped up her days leading the program, 11 state championships had been secured. Four of those titles were won in consecutive fashion from 2005-2008. The four-peat remains a state record. From 1998-2017, Frazier’s orange and black played in 15 of 20 state title matches.

While guiding the program, 10 of Frazier-led teams won Little Kanawha Conference championships.

In 2017, Frazier was selected as the National Volleyball Coach of the Year Award and was twice (2003 and 2017) named the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) West Virginia Coach of the Year. She is a member of the inaugural class of the Wirt County Sports Hall of Fame.

Frazier was a great basketball player at Wirt County, scoring 992 career points while earning Class A Second Team All-State status.

At Fairmont State College (now University), Frazier won the prestigious Feaster Academic Athletic Award. She was an All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Second Team pick. Frazier played on the 1989 WVIAC championship team. In the record books of Fighting Falcon volleyball, Frazier remains in the program’s Top 10 for career assists.
