Tennis anyone? Jeff Kefalos is one of the most successful tennis players to play for the historic Parkersburg High Big Red program. Kerfalos starred at both the high school and collegiate level as a player before embarking on a successful coaching career.
He was the West Virginia high school boys No. 1 singles state champ in 1970, 1971 and 1972 while helping lead PHS to the team title all three years. Kefalos won the prestigious USTA Midwest Section (six states) Boys 18 title in 1971.
Kefalos took his talents to the University of South Carolina and put together a 104-14 record in singles play from 1973-1976. He produced a record in doubles play of 74-15 and was the team’s Most Valuable Player each season during his career in addition to being a team captain.
In 1976, he was a finalist for the Rafael Osuna Award, which recognizes outstanding sportsmanship to collegiate tennis.
He later served as the school’s head women’s tennis coach from 1978-1983. He was a finalist for National Coach of the Year in 1983. He was a men’s assistant from 1994-2009, coaching several All-Americans, NCAA qualifiers and All-Southeastern Conference athletes.
Kefalos was recognized as Regional and National Assistant Coach of the year in 1998. He was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2011 and the United States Tennis Association South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2014.
He was both a South Carolina men’s closed singles champion and a men’s closed doubles champion during his time on the court.
