Mike Cox – Class of 2024

MICHAEL COX (PLEASANTS COUNTY)

A product of St. Marys High School, Michael Cox enjoyed loads of success on the football field.

While at SMHS in the seasons of 1983-85, Cox, who graduated in 1986, rushed for what was then a career-best 3,289 yards wearing the purple and gold as a running back. He is still third in career scoring at the school with 256 points.

Cox earned West Virginia First Team All-State honors in both his junior and senior seasons. He was also a First Team selection for the All-Little Kanawha Conference squad.

Besides football, Cox was a standout on the track. In 1986, he won the Class AA-A 110 high hurdles at the State Meet, setting a school record of 15.31.

After graduation from St. Marys, he took his football talents first to Ohio University where he was a walk-on. Playing slot receiver, Cox was named the program’s Freshman of the Year for the season of 1986.

Cox moved on to Glenville State College (now University) where he returned to his familiar position of running back. His 988 yards on 114 carries led the Pioneers in rushing during the 1987 season. He also scored four touchdowns that year.

The following season, Cox made the switch to defensive back. He collected 56 tackles (35 solo and 21 assists) for the Pioneer prevent unit.

He later went to the WVU School of Pharmacy and eventually opened Cox Family Pharmacy, Inc.
